What to do with the bill of sale once it’s printed

Massachusetts title transfers go through Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV). Follow these steps in order.

  1. Fill in every field on the bill of sale.
  2. Both parties sign and date. Massachusetts does not require notarization for private sales.
  3. Print two copies — one each for buyer and seller.
  4. Seller signs the title assignment.
  5. Buyer takes the RMV-1 to their insurance agent for a stamp, then brings the signed title, this bill of sale, RMV-1, and fees to a Massachusetts RMV office.
