|---|---|
| Title transfer fee | $15.00 |
| Base registration fee | Check official source |
| State sales/use tax rate | 6% |

Michigan title fee is $15. State sales tax on vehicles is 6%. Annual registration is calculated from MSRP for newer passenger vehicles and may be discounted by age. Plate transfer fee is $10; standard plate fee is $5.
What may change your final title transfer cost in Michigan
These factors are specific to Michigan and are common reasons the final amount you pay differs from the calculator estimate.
County and local fees in Michigan
Michigan has no county sales-tax add-on โ the 6% state rate is uniform across all 83 counties. Local cost variance comes entirely from the MSRP-based registration formula: two identical model-year vehicles registered in the same county can owe different annual registration if they had different original MSRPs. The registration fee depreciates 10% per year for the first three renewals, then flattens.
Source โLate title-transfer penalties
Michigan requires the buyer to title and register the vehicle within 15 days of acquiring it. Late registration triggers a $10 late-title fee and possible insurance and inspection complications. Driving on the previous owner's plate after the sale is illegal โ plates stay with the seller in Michigan, not the vehicle.
Source โSafety inspection requirements
Michigan does not require a periodic state safety inspection for routine title transfers. A simple VIN inspection by a Secretary of State branch employee or a Michigan-licensed dealer is required when titling a vehicle that was previously titled out of state or has a salvaged/rebuilt title.
Source โEmissions testing in Michigan
Michigan has no statewide emissions inspection program. No county currently requires emissions testing for routine passenger-vehicle registration or title transfer. This makes Michigan an outlier among large Rust Belt and Midwest states.
Source โIf the vehicle has a lien
Michigan records liens on the paper title and electronically; the lienholder typically retains the paper title until the loan is satisfied. There is a $1 lien-notation fee โ lower than most states โ but Michigan recently moved to electronic-lien-and-title (ELT) participation for most lenders, which means many vehicles have no paper title produced until the lien is released.
Source โWhere you actually file in Michigan
Michigan vehicle services are run by the Department of State (Secretary of State), not a DMV. The Secretary of State operates a network of branch offices statewide and a self-service kiosk program (SOS Express) for renewals. Many routine transactions can be completed online; new titles still require an in-person visit unless processed through a Michigan-licensed dealer.

How Michigan calculates the tax
Michigan charges 6% sales/use tax on the purchase price for both dealer and private-party transactions. A unique-to-Michigan wrinkle: if the buyer trades in a vehicle as part of the deal, the trade-in credit reduces the taxable amount โ but only up to a statutory cap that phases up each year (the cap is set to fully eliminate by 2029 under PA 1 of 2018). Family transfers between spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, or in-laws qualify for a sales-tax exemption.
Source โDealer purchase vs. private-party sale
Michigan dealers collect 6% sales tax at delivery and submit title paperwork to the Secretary of State on the buyer's behalf. Private-party buyers must visit a Secretary of State branch with the signed title, proof of insurance, and ID within 15 days to pay tax and register the vehicle. Plates in Michigan stay with the seller โ buyers either transfer a plate from another vehicle they own or get new plates.
Source โExample title transfer estimate in Michigan
Tom buys a used 2022 Ford F-150 from a private seller in Wayne County, Michigan for $32,000. The truck's original MSRP was $45,000.
| Vehicle purchase price | $32,000.00 |
| Title fee | $15.00 |
| Registration / base fee | $165.00 |
| State sales / use tax | $1,920.00 |
| Plate transfer (from existing vehicle) | $10.00 |
| Estimated total out the door | $34,110.00 |
Tom pays 6% sales tax on his $32,000 purchase price ($1,920). Registration is calculated from the F-150's original $45,000 MSRP using Michigan's ad-valorem schedule โ roughly $165 in year one for this MSRP class (confirm exact figure on the SOS fee page). The title fee is just $15. Because Tom is transferring a plate from his existing vehicle, he pays a $10 transfer fee instead of new-plate fees. No emissions inspection is required in Michigan.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to transfer a car title in Michigan?
The Michigan title transfer fee is $15.00, plus any applicable state sales/use tax (6%), registration fees, and county or local add-ons. Use the calculator above for an estimate; confirm the final number with Michigan Secretary of State โ Vehicle Services before paying.
How is my Michigan registration fee actually calculated?
For 1984-and-newer passenger vehicles, Michigan uses an ad-valorem formula based on the original MSRP: roughly the MSRP ร a percentage that depreciates 10% per year for the first three renewals (from year 1 to year 4) and then flattens. A vehicle with a $30,000 MSRP might pay around $148 the first year and $90 once depreciation flattens. Trucks and pre-1984 vehicles use weight-based tables instead.
Why didn't the seller's license plate come with the car in Michigan?
Michigan is one of the states where the license plate belongs to the owner, not the vehicle. When a Michigan vehicle is sold, the seller keeps their plate. The buyer either transfers a plate from another vehicle they own (a $10 transfer fee applies) or gets brand-new plates at the Secretary of State's office.
Does Michigan really have no emissions inspection?
Correct. Michigan is one of the few large states with no statewide or regional emissions inspection program. Vehicles registered anywhere in Michigan are exempt from periodic emissions testing as a condition of registration. The state does run an Air Quality Division at EGLE that monitors air quality, but there is no consumer-facing vehicle inspection program.
