What to do with the bill of sale once it’s printed

New Jersey title transfers go through New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Follow these steps in order.

  1. Fill in every field on the bill of sale.
  2. Both parties sign and date. New Jersey does not require notarization for private sales.
  3. Print two copies — one each for buyer and seller.
  4. Seller fills in the assignment section on the back of the title (price, odometer, signatures).
  5. Buyer brings the signed title, this bill of sale, sales tax payment, and fees to a NJ MVC agency within 10 working days.
