ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ADAS:DRIVER MONITORING:CAMERA/SENSOR

Model years affected: 2022–2023

The problem

Isuzu Motors Limited (Isuzu) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Isuzu NQR, NRR, 2022 Chevrolet Low Cab Forward (LCF) 5500HD, 2022-2023 Chevrolet LCF 5500XD, and 2023 Hino S52 vehicles. When the vehicles were modified to extend the frame to a 200-inch or 212-inch wheelbase, the ABS module and if equipped, optional ADAS Camera, were not recalibrated to account for the stretched frame.

What can happen

An improperly calibrated ADAS camera and ABS module can result in the Automatic Emergency Braking System (AEB) and Electronic Steering Control System (ESC) not functioning properly, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix

Dealers will recalibrate the ADAS camera and ABS module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 17, 2023. Owners may contact Isuzu customer service at 1-866-441-9638. Isuzu's number for this recall is V2301.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL

Model years affected: 2019

The problem

Isuzu Technical Center of America, Inc. (Isuzu) is recalling certain 2019 Isuzu NPR-HD, NPR-XD, NQR, NRR, Chevrolet 4500HD, 4500XD, 5500HD, and 5500XD. The odometer accurately measures the distance traveled in miles, but erroneously indicates that they are kilometers in the LCD display instead of miles.

What can happen

An incorrect odometer reading could lead to an unintended delay in critical safety related maintenance, potentially impairing the safe operation of the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix

Isuzu will notify customers and dealers to inspect the odometer LCD on their vehicle. If the distance traveled is listed as 'mi' (miles), the customer or dealer will be requested to inform Isuzu and the recall for that vehicle will be deemed complete. If the distance is listed as 'km' (kilometers), the customer will be requested to take the vehicle to the dealer, and the dealer will replace the meter cluster with one that indicates 'mi' (miles). The new odometer will be reprogrammed to reflect the number of miles traveled that was indicated on the original odometer. The recall began March 13, 2019. Isuzu owners may contact Isuzu customer service at 1-866-441-9638, GM owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-862-4389.

EQUIPMENT

Model years affected: 2017–2018

The problem

Isuzu Technical Center of America, Inc. (Isuzu) is recalling certain 2011-2017 Isuzu NPR, 2008 NPR HD and NPR-HD Gas, 2011-2018 NPR HD and NRR, 2015-2018 NPR XD, 2012-2018 NQR, 2012-2017 NPR Gas and NPR-HD Gas, 2016-2017 Chevrolet Low Cab Forward 3500 HD, 3500 and 4500 and 2017-2018 Chevrolet Low Cab Forward 4500 HD, 4500 XD, 5500 HD and 5500 XD vehicles, equipped with certain Walter Kidde Plastic-Handle Fire Extinguishers, models FC10 and FC110. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable.

What can happen

In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.

The fix

Isuzu will notify owners, instructing them to contact Kidde to get a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in December 2017. Owners may contact Isuzu customer service at 1-866-441-9638 or Walter Kidde customer service at 1-855-262-3540 or they may also visit www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" to order replacement fire extinguishers free of charge. Isuzu's number for this recall is V1705. Note: This recall includes fire extinguishers provided as a remedy for previous Isuzu recall 15V778.

What to do if your Chevrolet Low Cab Forward 5500 is on this list

A recall listed here applies to a range of vehicles, not to every car of that model year. Manufacturers narrow it down by build date and VIN, so the only way to know whether yours is included is to check the VIN. You can do that free on NHTSA's recall lookup, or by calling any franchised dealer for that brand with your VIN in hand.

Recall repairs are free. Under federal law the manufacturer has to fix a safety defect at no charge, and there is no mileage limit and no expiry on that obligation for vehicles under 15 years old. A dealer cannot charge you for the parts, the labour, or the diagnosis on a recall repair, and you do not need to have bought the car there. If a dealer asks you to pay, that is worth escalating to the manufacturer's customer line, which is listed in the remedy text of each recall above.

Recalls do not block a title transfer or registration in any state. You can legally buy, sell, or register a car with an open recall, and sellers are generally not required to fix one first. That said, an open recall is worth raising before money changes hands, especially one with a do-not-drive advisory. If you are buying, run the VIN before you hand over the payment; if you are selling, telling the buyer about an open recall costs you nothing and avoids a dispute later.

Chevrolet Low Cab Forward 5500 recall questions

How many recalls does the Chevrolet Low Cab Forward 5500 have?

NHTSA lists 3 recall campaigns for the Chevrolet Low Cab Forward 5500 across model years 2017 to 2023. That count covers recalls filed from 2010 onward. Not every campaign applies to every car of that model year, because manufacturers limit recalls by build date and VIN.

Which Chevrolet Low Cab Forward 5500 model year has the most recalls?

No single model year of the Chevrolet Low Cab Forward 5500 stands out. The recalls listed here are spread fairly evenly across the years, with no year carrying an unusual share.

Are Chevrolet Low Cab Forward 5500 recall repairs free?

Yes. Federal law requires the manufacturer to repair a safety recall at no cost, including parts and labour, on vehicles under 15 years old. There is no mileage limit, and you do not have to be the original owner or have bought the car from that dealer.

Can I sell or register a Chevrolet Low Cab Forward 5500 with an open recall?

Yes. An open recall does not stop a title transfer or registration in any state, and private sellers are generally not required to repair one first. Dealers face stricter rules on some safety recalls. If you are buying, check the VIN before you pay; the repair is free, but you want to know what you are taking on.
