ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL

Model years affected: 2022

The problem

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2022 Transit vehicles. The Instrument Panel Cluster may not properly illuminate telltales or gauges and the speedometer and tachometer pointers. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 101, "Control and Displays," and 102, "Trans Shift Lever Seq/Starter Interlock/Trans Braking Effect," and 105, "Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems," and 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

What can happen

Failure to illuminate the cluster display could render safety-related telltales and gauges unreadable, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix

Dealers will update the instrument panel cluster software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 26, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22C11.

EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS

Model years affected: 2022

The problem

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2022 F-Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F600, and 2023 E-Series vehicles. In addition, certain 2016 E-Series, 2017 and 2019 F-450, 2021 F-350, and 2021 Transit vehicles that received a reprinted label are also included in this recall. The Safety Certification Labels are missing the tire size, rim type, and tire pressure values for both the front and rear axles. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 110, "Tire Selection and Rim", and 120, "Wheels and Rims-Other Than Passenger Cars."

What can happen

Missing tire information could lead to an incorrect tire or rim being installed, or incorrect tire pressure, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix

Dealers will replace the Safety Certification Label, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 6, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22C09.

BACK OVER PREVENTION:DISPLAY FUNCTION

Model years affected: 2022

The problem

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2022 Transit vehicles. The rearview camera supplied in the Rear Video Camera and Prep Kit will not function when installed by the final stage manufacturer (upfitter), resulting in a blank rearview image.

What can happen

A camera that does not display a rearview image while reversing can reduce the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix

Dealers will update the audio control module configuration settings, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 12, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S18.

BACK OVER PREVENTION:DISPLAY FUNCTION

Model years affected: 2022

The problem

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2022 Transit vehicles. The image processing module for the 360-degree camera system may not process the image from the rearview camera under certain rear loading vehicle conditions.

What can happen

Loss of the rearview camera image while reversing can reduce the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix

Dealers will update the Image Processing Module B (IPMB) software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 7, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S16.

POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DRIVESHAFT

Model years affected: 2020

The problem

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020 Transit vehicles equipped with All Wheel Drive (AWD). The bolts that attach the rear driveshaft to the transfer case may become loose or damaged, which can result in separation of the driveshaft from the transfer case.

What can happen

Driveshaft separation can result in a loss of drive power, or unintended movement while parked if the parking brake is not engaged, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix

Dealers will inspect and replace the driveshaft bolts. If any loose bolts are found, the driveshaft, attachment hardware, transfer case flange kit, and seal will also be replaced. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 4, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S54.

PARKING BRAKE:CONVENTIONAL:MECHANICAL:LINKAGE AND CABLE

Model years affected: 2015–2020

The problem

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Transit vehicles. An incorrect driveshaft torsional damper service kit may have been installed, which can allow the damper shield to contact the parking brake cable, possibly resulting in parking brake failure.

What can happen

Parking brake failure can result in unintended vehicle movement, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix

Dealers will replace the passenger side parking brake cable with a cable that provides sufficient clearance to the damper shield, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on September 24, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 14, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. What to do if your Ford Transit is on this list

A recall listed here applies to a range of vehicles, not to every car of that model year. Manufacturers narrow it down by build date and VIN, so the only way to know whether yours is included is to check the VIN. You can do that free on NHTSA's recall lookup, or by calling any franchised dealer for that brand with your VIN in hand.

Recall repairs are free. Under federal law the manufacturer has to fix a safety defect at no charge, and there is no mileage limit and no expiry on that obligation for vehicles under 15 years old. A dealer cannot charge you for the parts, the labour, or the diagnosis on a recall repair, and you do not need to have bought the car there. If a dealer asks you to pay, that is worth escalating to the manufacturer's customer line, which is listed in the remedy text of each recall above.

Recalls do not block a title transfer or registration in any state. You can legally buy, sell, or register a car with an open recall, and sellers are generally not required to fix one first. That said, an open recall is worth raising before money changes hands, especially one with a do-not-drive advisory. If you are buying, run the VIN before you hand over the payment; if you are selling, telling the buyer about an open recall costs you nothing and avoids a dispute later.

Ford Transit recall questions

How many recalls does the Ford Transit have?

NHTSA lists 64 recall campaigns for the Ford Transit across model years 2014 to 2025. That count covers recalls filed from 2010 onward. Not every campaign applies to every car of that model year, because manufacturers limit recalls by build date and VIN.

Which Ford Transit model year has the most recalls?

The 2015 Ford Transit carries the most, with 26 recall campaigns. A high count does not automatically mean a worse car: a single supplier fault can trigger a recall across an entire production run, and manufacturers that report problems quickly tend to show more campaigns.

Are Ford Transit recall repairs free?

Yes. Federal law requires the manufacturer to repair a safety recall at no cost, including parts and labour, on vehicles under 15 years old. There is no mileage limit, and you do not have to be the original owner or have bought the car from that dealer.

Can I sell or register a Ford Transit with an open recall?

Yes. An open recall does not stop a title transfer or registration in any state, and private sellers are generally not required to repair one first. Dealers face stricter rules on some safety recalls. If you are buying, check the VIN before you pay; the repair is free, but you want to know what you are taking on.

Where this data comes from

Every recall on this page is published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the federal agency that oversees vehicle safety recalls in the United States. We pull the full recall file from NHTSA and reproduce the campaign number, defect description, consequence, and remedy exactly as the manufacturer reported them. NHTSA data is in the public domain.
