How vehicle paperwork works in California
California vehicle transactions are handled by the California DMV. Most title transfers must be submitted within 10 days of sale. A smog certificate is required for most 1976+ vehicles over 4 years old. Sellers must file a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability online within 5 business days.
